Infrastructure Shapes Every Economic Transformation

Artificial intelligence is changing more than software. It is putting new pressure on the physical systems required to power the next generation of economic growth.

The rapid expansion of AI data centers is increasing electricity demand, exposing transmission constraints, and forcing new questions about where generation capacity can be built.

Dakota Ridge Capital helps investors, developers, and strategic partners think through those questions. We bring decades of infrastructure finance experience and a research-driven view ofthe relationship between energy markets, capital, and long-term economic growth.

Neil’s Perspective

After more than two decades in infrastructure finance, one thing has become clear to me: the biggest changes in a market rarely announce themselves. They begin quietly, long before they become obvious to everyone else.

Most of my career has been spent financing energy projects and working alongside investors, developers, and financial institutions. Looking at projects from each of those perspectives teaches you how markets actually work. You start to see where capital is flowing, where projects stall, and where the next constraints are beginning to emerge.

Over the past few years, I found myself coming back to the same question.

If artificial intelligence continues to scale, what does that mean for the electric grid?

Most conversations about AI focus on models, chips, or software. Those are all part of the story. But every new data center also requires electricity, transmission capacity, and years of planning to support it.

That part of the story often receives far less attention. That’s what pulled me deeper into this work.

Today, much of my time is spent studying how AI data centers are changing electricity demand, how utilities and developers are responding, and where those shifts create opportunities the market may still be underestimating.

Dakota Ridge Capital grew out of that way of thinking. We work with investors, developers, and strategic partners making long-term decisions in markets that continue to evolve. My role is to help connect the pieces, separate lasting change from short-term noise, and provide a framework for thinking about where the market may be heading.

AI Grid Report is an extension of that work. Every week, I share the research, observations, and conversations that are shaping my thinking. My goal isn’t to predict the future. It’s to better understand what’s changing—and to help others do the same.

About Dakota Ridge Capital

Dakota Ridge Capital works with family offices, institutional investors, infrastructure developers, and strategic partners investing in the energy systems that will support the next generation of economic growth.

The energy market is becoming more complex. AI data centers are driving new electricity demand, project timelines are changing, interconnection queues continue to grow, and investment decisions increasingly depend on understanding how these forces fit together.

That’s where we spend our time.

We help clients evaluate opportunities, think through capital strategies, structure transferable tax credit transactions, and better understand the market forces influencing investment decisions.

One of the advantages of working across different parts of the market is perspective. We see the questions developers are asking, the risks investors are evaluating, and the policy and regulatory changes affecting both. Looking at those pieces together often reveals opportunities that aren’t obvious when viewed in isolation.

The same perspective shapes
AI Grid Report. It gives us an opportunity to share what we’re seeing, explain why it matters, and contribute to a broader discussion about energy markets and the investment decisions shaping them.

Whether we’re advising on a transaction or discussing broader market trends, the objective is the same: helping clients make better-informed decisions in a market that’s changing quickly.

AI Grid Report

I didn’t start AI Grid Report because I wanted to publish another newsletter.

I started writing because I was trying to make sense of what I was seeing.

As AI data centers expanded, I found myself spending more time looking at electricity demand, transmission planning, interconnection queues, utility filings, and the investment flowing into theenergy sector. Much of that information existed, but it was scattered across different sourcesand rarely connected into a broader picture.

Writing each week became a way to organize those ideas.

AI Grid Report is where I share the questions I’m asking, the data I’m following, and theobservations I think are worth paying attention to. Sometimes that means looking at powermarkets. Other times it’s transmission, project finance, tax policy, or how developers and utilitiesare responding to changing demand.

The report isn’t about predicting what’s going to happen next. It’s about paying attention to what the market is telling us today—and thinking carefully about where those signals may lead.

If those observations help readers see the market a little differently or ask better questions, then it’s doing exactly what I hoped it would do.

Experience & Expertise

Former Managing Director, ORIX Corporation USA
25+ years in infrastructure finance and structured capital markets
Transactions representing more than $3 billion in infrastructure investment
Publisher of AI Grid Report
Advisor to family offices, institutional investors, developers, financial institutions, and strategic capital partners
Experience in project finance, transferable tax credits, structured transactions, and energy markets
I’ve spent more than 25 years working in infrastructure finance, but what has stayed with me isn’t any single transaction or project.

It’s the way markets behave.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with developers trying to get projects financed, investors deciding where to deploy capital, and financial institutions evaluating risk. Seeing those different perspectives taught me that successful investing is rarely about finding a perfect opportunity. It’sabout understanding how markets, policy, financing, and execution all influence one another.

Before founding Dakota Ridge Capital, I served in senior leadership roles at ORIX Corporation USA, where I worked on renewable energy finance, structured investments, and transferable tax credit transactions. Those years gave me the opportunity to work on more than $3 billion in infrastructure investments and to see first hand how institutional investors evaluate opportunities.

That experience continues to shape the questions I ask today.

Whether I’m reviewing a new project, researching an issue for AI Grid Report, or speaking with clients, I’m usually trying to understand the same thing:

What is changing in the market, and what are the implications if that trend continues?

That’s the perspective I bring to every client engagement.

Looking Forward

One of the things I enjoy most about this work is that the market is always giving us new questions to think about.

Every week brings new data, new projects, new policy decisions, and new conversations with people working across the energy sector. Sometimes those developments reinforce what I already believe. Other times they force me to rethink my assumptions. That’s part of theprocess.

I don’t believe anyone can consistently predict exactly where markets are going.

What we can do is pay attention, stay curious, and keep asking better questions.

That’s the approach I bring to
Dakota Ridge Capital, to AI Grid Report, and to every conversation I have with clients.

The energy sector is entering a period of profound change. My goal is simply to understand it as clearly as I can and to help others do the same.
